St. Augustine is about 29 miles east of Palatka on State Road 207, a four-lane highway that runs from East Palatka to the coast. The drive takes roughly 40 to 45 minutes. That makes Palatka a quiet, affordable base for visiting St. Augustine and Crescent Beach, with a porch to come home to instead of a parking garage.
Is Palatka in St. Johns County?
No, and the names cause confusion. Palatka is the county seat of Putnam County and sits on the St. Johns River. St. Augustine is in St. Johns County, on the Atlantic coast. The two are neighbors, and State Road 207 connects them directly.
What should you see in St. Augustine?
- Castillo de San Marcos. The Spanish fort on the bayfront, run by the National Park Service. It is open daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas, with first entry at 9 a.m. and last entry at 5 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults 16 and over and is valid for seven days; children 15 and under are free with an adult. The park takes cards only.
- Flagler College. Henry Flagler’s Hotel Ponce de Leon, built in 1888 and now a National Historic Landmark. Guided tours leave from the rotunda at 74 King Street at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- Lightner Museum. Across the street in Flagler’s former Hotel Alcazar.
- St. Augustine Lighthouse. The 1874 tower on Anastasia Island, with 219 steps to the top.
- The old city on foot. St. Augustine was founded on September 8, 1565. The city describes itself as the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African American origin in the United States, and the streets around the plaza are best explored without a plan.
Where should you park?
The Historic Downtown Parking Facility at 1 Cordova Street has 1,200 spaces and is open around the clock. At the time of writing it charges $20 per entry during the day and $5 per entry in the evening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Park once and walk; everything above except the lighthouse is within a few blocks.
Beaches and a second fort
The nearest Atlantic beach to Palatka is Crescent Beach, about 27 to 29 miles away by State Road 207 and State Road 206. Anastasia State Park, just across the bridge from downtown St. Augustine, is open from 8 a.m. to sundown and charges $8 per vehicle.
South of Crescent Beach, Fort Matanzas National Monument is free, including the short ferry ride to the fort. The ferry runs Thursday through Monday, and same-day boarding passes often run out before late morning, so go early.
Nights of Lights
St. Augustine’s winter light display runs from Saturday, November 21, 2026, through Sunday, January 18, 2027. The evening parking rate makes a late-afternoon arrival the easy way to see it, and you are back on the porch in Palatka well before midnight.
Would you rather ride?
The Palatka-to-St. Augustine State Trail is a 19-mile paved rail-trail that follows State Road 207, with trailheads at Vermont Boulevard, Armstrong Park, and East River Road. It is part of the St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop.
Why stay in Palatka instead?
A whole 1871 house with a yard and a driveway, for one party, in a town where you can walk to the river and to dinner. Spend one day in St. Augustine, one at the beach, and the rest on Palatka’s own riverfront or among the azaleas at Ravine Gardens.
